Welcome! The Joseph L. Popp, Jr. Butterfly Conservatory is a 3,000 sq. ft. indoor tropical garden located in historic Oneonta, NY. We exhibit various species of tropical birds and reptiles year-round, and butterflies during the warmer months of spring, summer and fall.

Our aim is to introduce our visitors to both the wonderment and spectacular biodiversity of the natural world and our exhibit includes invertebrates, fish, reptiles, and various species of beautiful tropical birds among others. It is a fantastic family activity and learning experience for all ages!

We are a bird exhibit during the winter. Butterflies will be back in the spring!

The conservatory is closed until further notice. We need your help to bring back the butterflies!!

The Butterfly Conservatory provides a fascinating multigenerational experience for the community. However, we have been closed this past winter due to problems stemming from weather and water damage. We have worked hard to repair the damage and are now requesting your help to restore the exhibit and number of butterflies. A donation of any amount will move us toward our goal. Together we can make this happen! Please support the Butterfly Campaign!!

UPDATE: Friends!!! We so encouraged by the matching gift a fan has offered us!! Mary Shedd has offered a matching gift of $500 after we receive the next $500 in donations. That would push us all the way up to $3150!! We can only do this with your help!! Please make a donation so that we can take advantage of this generous offer!! The sooner we reach our goal, the sooner we will re-open!! Thousands upon thousands of visitors have passed through the Popp Conservatory over the last eight years. Please help us to remain a part of Oneonta and upstate New York.
A very big Thank You to all who have already contributed. We are doing our best to open soon!
